I went last year and wasn't at all impressed. I'm now convinced Asians will destroy the world by trashing its environment. Mind you it's as cheap as chips. I couldn't get used to the idea that 250,000 Dong was like £4! Now £8 apparently so inflation taking hold...
You'll get loads of visits to temples but frankly, one temple is much like another. Enjoy the pollution in Hanoi. I saw my first ever traffic jam at a traffic light cross-roads that included only one car and thousands of motorbikes that just couldn't go back or forth with so many inter-woven into a total jam.
The people are lovely and industrious but the countryside is polluted and even a couple of days on a boat journey around Ha Long Bay was spoilt by floating rubbish. The ships tip it out the back of the boats not the tourists!
There were some beautiful beaches around Hoang Mai but you can get those anywhere and not worth a 10+ hour flight direct from Paris to Hanoi. It is no joke when you do a split journey in Dubai or somewhere with an interruption either one way or the other.
I never got down south to Ho Chi Minh which several told me is better but I'm not convinced enough to want to go back. But to be fair I much prefer sitting beside my own pool in SW France to flying around the world for what I have at home.
I quite fancy seeing South America though. My daughter is currently dating an Argie lawyer and back from teaching in Vietnam and Thailand so, we might get a chance if she goes to teach in Argentine...

Can't leave the country on a 15 day tourist visa.
Biggest problem I have is her (no change there then) bit of a fussy eater , no spice garlic etc - doesn't even put salt and pepper on her food so need western type hotels otherwise she will just live on pizza and get fatter.
All inclusive hotels away from the island are a fortune so I'm pretty stuck with going there unless anyone knows of any other resorts .
Tried E bookers , last minute etc and no joy
Only others are Kouini and virgin and I ain't got that sort of money.

All about opinions, but I would leave it Joe. I've been to lots of different islands in SE Asia and didn't think it was up to much. Loads of rubbish on the beaches caused by the tides and found the whole place a bit wierd if i'm honest. Much preferred Mui Nei on the mainland, plus you can cover a lot of distance in a couple of weeks, so can take plenty in. If you just want to do a nice beach/island I would stick to Thailand or Malaysia (tioman and perenthains are both speacial).

Journey upriver from HCMC to Phnom Penh is doable, I believe. Not sure about visas at land crossings (I reckon they should be available on arrival but best to check once you're there)
Alternatively, it's a short flight to PP (or you could alternatively fly to Siem Reap for Angkor Wat). Visa on arrival no problem by air.
And i believe it's an automatic 15 day visa on arrival in VN. But you might want to double-check that there's no re-entry restriction (i.e. you need to be away for 15 days before you get another 15 days or somesuch) If such re-entry restrictions do apply then maybe do Cambodia at very start or end of trip?
But staying in VN, HCMC might be worth a few days. Cu Chi Tunnels were worth visiting (though I went to Cu Chi back in the 1990s so probably changed a bit since then)
Anyway, I'd say a week on Phu Quoc then look at options for the other week.

Can get a boat to the mainland. May also be worth researching getting into Cambodia if you're feeling adventurous. Sihanoukville is close by. Visas might be a nightmare though, I'm sure someone else will know a lot more.

For 2 weeks, would recommend the mainland.
As mentioned Hoi An is lovely. Great place for a couple. Hanoi is a great city in itself and loads of beaches just as beautiful as the ones in Phu Quoc easily reachable.

Lived in Vietnam for two years, half in Hoi An, half in Ho Chi Minh,, Phu Quoc is developed now but not on the same scale as the Thai islands, A lot will depend on your time of year (the water is getting more and more polluted and the current at various times of the year changes things). 10 days is a long time, but depends on your frame of mind - if you're happy being on a beautiful white sand beach, drinking beers for £1 and eating freshly BBQ'd fish dinners for about £5 max then you'll be alright. If you need to be doing things every day, maybe it is a bit too long. It is a great place to rent a moped though, generally they are about £3 - £5 per day out there and the roads of Phu Quoc are generally empty...
